My Journey With Video Apps: Vidlab

Developer: Vidlab

Cost: Free (in app purchases)

App Overview (from iTunes): VidLab is a multi-track, multi-clip video editor that allows you to easily create beautiful, fun videos & photo stories by adding text, artwork, music, video, sound effects, overlays, voice-overs & more to your videos (and photos)!

What I Like: I really like the ability to edit your clips prior to input. I also like how they automatically conform a vertical video to a horizontal video by adding a blurred background to it. That’s a nice touch. The ability to fine tune sound editing and transitions.

What I Don’t Like: No discernible speed ramping features. Does not save projects, have to complete project in one sitting. Filters are limited. Text is hard to manipulate with a touch screen. No music selection, everything comes from your iTunes/music library. iOS Only. Options without in app purchases are extremely limited. So much so, it’s not even worth using the free stuff. The watermark.

What I Think is Special About the App: The ability to choose to do a video, a collage or a slideshow is a nice touch and offers variety.

My Journey With Video Apps: Vizmato

Developer: Vizmato

Cost: Free (in app purchases)

App Overview (from iTunes): Now you can make great looking videos within minutes! Vizmato is an easy to use Movie maker, that let’s you add filters, themes, music, effects and text to make your videos super cool. Share these videos with your friends on Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Whatsapp and other social media channels!

What I Like: The effects you can add are really cool and easy to apply. You can order your scenes however you would like whether on the import or during the edit. Easy to upload to your particular social platform.

What I Don’t Like: You can only have five scenes. No transitions. Not easy to trim clips during editing. Ducking audio is not intuitive. Limited selection for the music. iOS Only. The in app purchases were weak as a selection. The watermark.

What I Think is Special About the App: Did not care for using this app. I cannot recommend.

My Journey With Video Apps: Oringe Inc’s Videohance

Developer: Oringe Inc.

Cost: $3.99

App Overview (from iTunes): Videohance is the ultimate video look editor.

What I Like: You can choose to add effects to one clip or all in one click. Wide variety of styles to choose from. Two types of export options. Easy to move items in an order you like.

What I Don’t Like: Can’t add transitions in the edit itself, have to wait on export. Can’t change the duration of stills as a whole, when importing you have to change duration then. iOS only. A bit pricey for a very limited app.

What I Think is Special About the App: I like how in the import phase you can reframe your pics and videos. That is a nice touch.

My Journey With Video Apps: iMovie

Developer: Apple

Cost: Free

App Overview (from iTunes): With a streamlined design and intuitive Multi-Touch gestures, iMovie lets you enjoy your videos and tell stories like never before. Browse your video library, share favorite moments, create beautiful movies, and watch them on all your devices in iMovie Theater. And with the iMovie extension, it’s fast and fun to make every video more memorable — right in the Photos app.

What I Like: This app also lets you have multiple projects like Clips. It allows on the timeline a mixture of both portrait and landscape videos and photos. The auto ducking audio feature is great and you can choose which clips you want audio from and don’t. The fade in and out is great and sharing is very easy. The adding a filter to the entire project or to select clips is really cool. Also being able to overlay video on top and/or create a picture and picture effect is very nice.

What I Don’t Like: The title tool is rudimentary and not easy to use right off the bat to make it do what you want. There’s no transition function on overlay clips. The speed function within the app to slow down/speed up clips is not very good. Trailer function doesn’t work well if you don’t have the right set ups. It just looks weird.

What I Think is Special About the App: This is a highly robust app that had more bells and whistles than I really expected. It’s the closest thing to a full pro video app I’ve seen on mobile, and can make things super complicated if you aren’t careful. It’s missing some key functionality to make it truly pro, but what you get for free is quite impressive.
