Capital Gains Article: Companies join forces to provide a la carte professional services

Four like-minded businesses in Lansing have merged their thought processes to form a new approach to delivering marketing and consulting services to nonprofits, small business and second stage companies.

In May, AKEA Web Solutions, CJBuck Consulting, Glow Social Media and UnoDeuce Multimedia unveiled 2nd Brain Collective—a collaboration of four partner companies. The collective offers clients the ability to engage with any or all of the four partner companies through a unique pay-only-for-what-you-need service offering.

“We witnessed a lot of agencies that have built their successes on an all or nothing bill,” says Schmidt. “But a lot of the folks we work with aren’t necessarily ready for full service.”

Schmidt says 2nd Brain Collection takes a more a la carte style by offering clients the ability to pick the service or services they need from four providers. Each company maintains their independent operations but shares and refers clients based on perceived needs.

“Each of us has collaborated with each other in different ways in the past,” says Schmidt. “The best analogy is we’re now like The Avengers—each of us is an individual, but we come together to solve a major problem.”

While focused on problem-solving, messaging and storytelling, the 2nd Brain Collective also concentrates on connecting businesses and building community. Among the methods and venues the collective devised are the networking event The Drinking Lunch and the information-driven 2BC Podcast featuring professionals and industry experts.

2nd Brain Collective Podcast – Chris Buck of CJBuck Consulting

In this episode, 2nd Brain Collective wraps up the season and reflects on our story and our podcasts so far.

In the studio with us for this special episode is Chris Buck from CJBuck Consulting. Thank you, Chris for joining us!

A little bit about Chris, in his own words:

I am a native Philadelphian – born, raised and educated. I was fortunate enough to land a job out of college with a company that rewarded my hustle and hard work. While it wasn’t glamorous, they taught very sound business lessons. I learned that taking care of your employees is critical if you expect them to give exceptional service on your behalf. Doing this successfully gives you the reputation as a great place to do business. As word of mouth spreads, you earn new and repeat customers. Your business grows and profits soar as a result. I firmly believe that most businesses focus too hard on the profits first, and try to back into the rest. If you don’t hire good employees and deliver great service, you simply won’t get there.

Living by this philosophy, along with a lot of hard work, allowed me to become a corporate officer in fourteen years – joining the top 1/2 percent of the 70,000 employees in this multi-branded, global, $14 billion company.

My career took me from Philadelphia to Seattle to Toledo to Lansing. It is impossible to express the lessons I’ve learned trying to conduct the same business model in a mega-city, a tech town during the dot-com craze and the Midwest under the shadow of the “big three” as manufacturing jobs shrunk to an all-time low. But I can tell you this – I hired great people, kept it fun, recognized top performers, delivered great customer service…and the business grew. Everywhere.
